This 40-hectare farm (92 acres) is at an average of 1,800 meters above sea level and has 25,984 trees.
Acquired in 2019, there was a lot of work that went into preparing and developing this virgin land into a carefully engineered specialty coffee farm. And there is still lots to do!
This farm is located in a wooded area densely populated by a great variety of native trees. Within the area, we can find natural water sources, making soil moisture last, even in times of drought.
Due to the limited access, this farm has been one of the most challenging farms to be planted. Therefore, we needed to create an accessible and safe route to this farm.
In September 2019, our team designed, and our workers created, a pathway from Jaramillo 8 to Jaramillo 37. This activity took many months to complete, cutting pathways into the side of the mountain, building bridges over water, all by hand, and doing so in a way that did not adversely affect our environment.
Enough access was created to enable the team at Jaramillo to plant this large, high altitude farm, beginning at the end of 2019, continuing throughout 2020 and to be completed in 2021. The main varietals planted to date are Caturra and Typica, with new varietals to follow soon.
As the trees approach full production we will need to add permanent housing and storage and maybe even coffee processing facilities directly on this large farm.
With 37 hectares of full production it would make more sense to depulp the coffee cherries on site, compost the bi-product with our Californian EarthWorms, and return the rich material to the farm, then transport just the coffee beans to our beneficio to be stored and rested before exportation.
Lots to do and exciting times ahead for the farm and this whole Jaramillo area!
